Grow Journal: Freezeberry Auto from Big Head Seeds

Freezeberry Auto PNW Garden

This Freezeberry from Big Head Seeds is our first attempt at an autoflower cannabis plant. Described as a result of natural genius with Mother Nature playing an exceptional role in a creation that was written in the stars, this was an accidental cross of a Blueberry auto with their Big Freeze strain.  We detail our growing journey with her below!!

Freezeberry Auto – Big Head Seeds – Grow Journal Week 1

PNW Garden Freezeberry Auto Wk 1

I won these seeds from Big Head Seeds last year and I’ve been anxious to try them since. I germinated a couple that I just didn’t give enough light to and they died off quickly. So I waited until the end of June to plant this outside to ensure maximum light. This seed soaked for less than 12 hours before sprouting a tap root, and I am hoping for a strong little lady. I planted it in a 1 gal. pot and set it outside.

After 3 days the seed looked to have died off again. I dug around the pot and couldn’t find it, digging deeper and deeper. Finally I gave up and tossed the pot to the side of my garden area in disgust. Two days later I look down and see the damn seedling growing away!! Sadly, due to my earlier excavations the seed was right against the side of the pot. To give the taproot some room, I transplanted it into the final 5 gal. pot after there were 2 inches of seedling growth above the dirt.

We only gave the plant water for the first week, we didn’t use any nutrients so we didn’t burn the little girl. There were some concerns over transplanting an autoflower but the seedling had no issue with the transplant.

At the end of week 2 we fed her the first round of Microbelife Hydro “early vegetative” schedule. We used Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and Veg & Fruit Enhancer at 2 tsp/gal to establish microbial growth. The last day of the week we applied 1 oz of the Nectar of the Gods mid-vegetative line we mixed for the garden to help begin promoting leaf growth.

Freezeberry Auto – Big Head Seeds – Grow Journal Week 2

PNW Garden Freezeberry Auto Wk 2

We were lucky enough to be sponsored by Remo Nutrients and Microbelife Hydro for the grow journals. We have established a new feeding schedule using the full line of Remo on Tuesday and the Main 4 line of MLHydro on Saturday.

Remo FeedSchedule:

Micro, Grow, VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal. 5ml/G first and second week, increasing to 6ml/G beginning in week 3.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. Intro feed of 2ml/G in first week, weekly feed of 1ml/Gal each week after.

The plant growth has more than doubled in the last week with the introduction of the ML Hydro and the small Nectar feeding. We have the plant in a pot we follow the sun with so there is an interesting curve to the stalk ,but she stands strong. She has a perfect structure with wide, thick leaves that show off some indica heritage.

Freezeberry Auto – Big Head Seeds – Grow Journal Week 3

PNW Grow House Freezberry Auto Wk 3

We continued with the same weekly feed schedule established above and this week we increased Remo to 7 ml/G. We still only use the first 4 in the line as there are no pre-flowers showing yet so we’re still in vegetative growth.

Remo FeedSchedule:

Micro, Grow, VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal. 7ml/G during week 4 of growth, increasing to 8ml/G in week 5.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. Weekly feed of 1ml/G continues unchanged.

As you can see, the plant growth has been exponential after the first Remo Nutrients feeding. This lady loves the nutrients. Plant growth has almost tripled, and that curve to her stalk keeps getting stronger and sexier!! The perfect structure of this plant continues to surprise me!!

Week five of growth had us up the weekly feed schedule and the Oregon weather fluctuations flipped our lady into flower. Take a look at that strong little pre-flower!

PNW Grow House Freezeberry Auto

We backed off on the nutrients this week to let her establish her flower cycle. Beginning next week will be using the following feeding schedule for Remo.

New Remo FeedSchedule:

Micro, Bloom (replacing Grow), VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal, Nature’s Candy & AstroFlower. 6 ml/G during of each except for Mag which is 8 ml/G.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. First flower feed of 2 ml/G to give a boost, reducing back to 1 ml/G for the rest of the flower cycle. Veg & Fruit will remain at 2 ml/G until time for flushing.

I went out early one morning and came across this gorgeous shot of the dew lined up on the wide blades of our little Freezeberry. They were perfectly aligned at each point and I had to share that awesome sight!

Freezeberry Auto – Big Head Seeds – Grow Journal Week 5

PNW Grow House Freezeberry Auto

Week six has us fully in flower and we’ve counted approximately 12 flower nodes. Sadly, the bi-polar Oregon weather flipped her into flower early enough that she’s only about 2 1/2 feet tall so our yield isn’t going to be much. What she lacks in height she’s going to more than make up for in the punch she’s gonna pack! Take a look at that main kola….

PNW Grow House Freezeberry Auto

A slight aroma is starting to come from this flower. The whole plant is beautifully formed and you can see each flower node forming in a perfectly symmetrical pattern that only shows how strong the genetics are in this flower. Big Head Seeds has really hit the mark with this strain!

Remo FeedSchedule:

Micro, Bloom, VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal, Nature’s Candy & AstroFlower, 7 ml/G each.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. 1 ml/G of each except Veg & Fruitat 2 ml/G.

Week seven is here and the growth has been phenomenal. Take a look at this main kola! This is at 13 days of flower. It just keeps climbing strong!

PNW Grow House Freezeberry Auto

To help with efficient nutrient uptake I did a bit of pruning on the lower branches. Starting from the main stalk, if there was new vegetative growth but no pistils I plucked that growth from the plant. I also removed any pre-flowers on the branches that were less than 5% of the size of the rest of the flowers. Using those guidelines I removed 3 under branches and 2 pre-flowers. Any calyx I found on the main stalk was left alone. I didn’t want to stress her too much and I sort of wanted to see how they grew.

Remo FeedSchedule:

Micro, Bloom, VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal, Nature’s Candy & AstroFlower, 8 ml/G each except for MagNifiCal at 6 ml/G.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. 1 ml/G of each except Veg & Fruit Enhancer at 2 ml/G.

Week 8 is going well and these flowers are coming on strong! Take a look at that shot of the main kola. The left side is last week’s update at around day 13, the right side is at the end of week 8 at day 23 of flower. That’s a ton of growth in just 10 days!

PNW Grow House Freezeberry AutoShe’s still very small but mighty! We did coax another inch of upward growth out of her, but that is mainly the kola growth. She is starting to fill out, with roughly 10 flowers forming around the outside. This week the aroma started to come on too. It’s faint with a bit of a lemon hint, but there is a berry overtone that is mouth-watering!

There were a few leaves that were literally sitting on one of the flowers so we cut them off to open those flowers to the sun. In the end we took 3 perfect leaves off of the plant with the hopes that the nutrients and sun will get to the flowers more efficiently!

This weeks feed schedule:

Remo Feed Schedule:

Micro, Bloom, VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal, Nature’s Candy & AstroFlower, 6 ml/G each except for MagNifiCal at 5 ml/G. We also increased the Astro Flower by an additional 1 ml/G to increase the flower size. We’ll see if this helps.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. 1 ml/G of each with Veg & Fruit Enhancer staying at 2 ml/G to help with the flower yield.

Freezeberry Auto – Big Head Seeds – Grow Journal Week 8

PNW Grow House Freezeberry Auto

It’s week 9 and this plant is doing her best to give us a nice yield. It’s been 5 weeks of flower now, specifically day 33, and this beauty is just killing it! We’ve been maintaining our feed schedule of Remo Nutrients and Microbelife Hydro and making sure she gets the most sun possible in our ever-changing Oregon weather.

PNW Grow House Freezeberry Auto

There are 10 strong flower nodes, and they are doing strong after removing the couple of sun leaves last week. Her smell is stronger every day, and she’s now competing for for our Platinum Girl Scout Cookie plant for catching our attention with her terpene profile!

As you can see, last week’s increase of the Astro Flower and Veg & Fruit Yield Enhancer showed impressive results! This flower is just truckin right along and we’re glad we decided to do that. We’re going to take that just a bit further with this week’s feeding.

This weeks feed schedule:

Remo Feed Schedule:

Micro, Bloom, VeloKelp, MagNiFiCal, Nature’s Candy & AstroFlower, 8 ml/G each except for MagNifiCal at 5 ml/G. We also increased the Astro Flower and Nature’s Candy by an additional 2 ml/G.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. 1 ml/G of each with Veg & Fruit Enhancer staying at 2 ml/G.

This is our last Microbe feeding, and there is one more Remo feeding coming this Tuesday. After that we enter the “flush” phase where we stop all nutrient feedings and use only water until harvest time. This will allow us to ensure there is no linger flavor or contamination from the nutrients. Our nutes are fit for consumption even, they just don’t taste great and you want to make sure you get it all flushed out before you harvest.

We’re getting close to harvest and we were going to stop our Remo and Microbe feedings. However, we had a ton of new pistil growth and very little changing from white to orange so we decided to give it one more week. We’ve been maintaining our feed schedule of Remo Nutrients and Microbelife Hydro (with a couple minor changes this last week, I’ll detail that below) and making sure she gets the most sun possible in our ever-changing Oregon weather.

We had an accident when trimming some yellowing leaves. I was using my new KutzEZ blades and had a muscle spasm in my back. Well these are sharp and when I convulsed I cut off an ENTIRE BRANCH!!! I whined for a couple hours and decided to put it in water and a 4 days later she’s still thriving!

14012808_10205685689501504_505367179_o

We put her in a Microbelife Hydro root dip and hopefully we’ll take her to full ready as the hairs are starting to orange and she still has an amazing blueberry waffle smell!

This weeks feed schedule:

Remo Feed Schedule:

Micro, Bloom, VeloKelp, Nature’s Candy & AstroFlower, 8 ml/G each. We didn’t use ANY MagNiFiCal this week at all. We kept the increased amount of Astro Flower and Nature’s Candy at an additional 2 ml/G.

MLHydro Feed Schedule:

Photosynthesis Plus, NourishC, Rootdip, and  Veg & Fruit Enhance. 1 ml/G of each with Veg & Fruit Enhancer staying at 2 ml/G.

This week was our last feeding week. The trichomes are beginning to turn amber and we have about 20% orange hairs now. There are 14 days left til harvest! We now start the “flush” phase where we stop all nutrient feedings and use only water until harvest time. This will allow us to ensure there is no lingering flavor or contamination from the nutrients. Our nutes are fit for consumption even, they just don’t taste great and you want to make sure you get it all flushed out before you harvest.

Freezeberry Auto – Big Head Seeds – Grow Journal Week 11

20160828_201128

After two full weeks of flush we finally chopped down our little Freezeberry! For those that don’t know, flush is the phase just before harvesting where you stop ALL nutrient feedings and use water only to “flush” out the nutrients from the plant so you don’t taste them. If your herb crackles or has a chemical taste to it you need to flush longer or check out different nutrients.

She was definitely small, but the yield wasn’t that bad for all her stunted size. Check out the size of the kolas we chopped off!

20160828_201946

After the accidental chopping off of a large branch we were left with 8 nice buds to hang to dry. We’ll see everyone next week when we trim up what we got! Here is the largest flower we chopped down….

20160828_201811

The tomato can is there for reference, that was one phat kola we got there!

Well, there we go! She’s all grown and chopped down and hanging in the dark for a little over a week! We’ll trim her up soon and get you a photo of our final yield!

Come back each week for the next update as we get ready to trim up our harvest! Don’t forget to check out our sponsors!
