The scholarly journal Economic Botany reported that archaeologists on a dig in Turpan’s Jiayi cemetery discovered a burial site between 2,500 and 2,800 years old with some fascinating contents. The Turpan Basin site was a crucial supply stop along the famous Silk Road trade route because of an ingenious underground irrigation system that allowed the desert-like climate to produce abundant crops.
